I am just in love with this one! Well, marbles are always wonderful to paint, but the whole flying marble thing is new for me and pretty cool :)

More fruit!
I was just trying to focus on the light here, and I think it worked! Sunlight is so beautiful, and this time of year it streams in the house at the loveliest angles.

Nom nom nom! Love the reflections or reflected light or whatever it is that goes on with lovely rounded things like this....

Eye III

sold

It's been a while since I did just a random feature closeup like this.... thought it might be particularly fun on a small square of wood!

Reflections of Marbles

3 1/2" x 5 1/2"

Still on a roll with the wood! I especially love painting something shiny on these pieces, it contrasts so nicely....
Well, I love painting shiny stuff anyways. On anything. But you knew that already.
With this I tried sanding the paint back out in the background, to show off the whole wood grain thing I guess.... even more contrast? I think I like it. Weathered vs. shiny in addition to the basic materials contrast. And of course the fun of painting all the marbles you can't actually see in this painting :)

Breaking out the toolbox on this lovely, rainy fall day. Hope you're all having a wonderful end to the week!

Copper Zippo

Definitely enjoying my new surface for daily paintings! There's something nice about the contrast between the wood grain and the textures I'm creating with the paint.

Alizarin Crimson

8"x16"

Just something beautiful. Inspired by the lovely Julie McNiven as Anna on Supernatural, but I definitely had some fun with it all- I just loved the shapes her hair was making, and the lovely open look on her face,

Of course, at the time she was hearing voices.....

Anyways. I'm still having lots of fun playing with soft edges, especially here, and then the light on her cheekbones was worth doing the whole painting just in itself. The title, you ask? Well, it's a paint color. And I used a lot of it mixed in with her hair, and edging her eye, and then just the tiniest bits mixed in around her lips and the edges of her nose. Trying to bring everything together :)

Sugar Skull

Something strange :)

Definitely related to "Shadow Side" from earlier this year- same striking little girl, similar Day-of-the-Dead-inspired makeup, but a lot more subtle in some ways. I love that she seems so powerful in this one!

Eggplant X

Another experiment in painting on wood! I think it totally works, thanks in part to having The World's Cutest Eggplant as a most cooperative model.

Tricolor Marble III

3 1/2" x 5 1/2"
sold

Isn't this fun? I went to Home Depot today and got some 1x4s, brought them home and broke out the circular saw to cut them into little daily-painting-sized pieces! Some sanding and a coat of paint  and some more sanding before I start the actual daily painting part, and all is well. And this was I get to put a small hole in the back of it, and you can hang my daily paintings just like that, no framing or anything unless you want to!

This makes me happy. I'm working on two life-sized eggplants like this right now :D

Silence

8"x16"

I'm pushing myself to use more soft edges.... and here, just about all of the edges are soft! I love the difference in the way things feel because of that :)

White Koi

Inspired by the goldfish pond at Duke Gardens- trying to get the glow of the sun off the fish brightening the water :)

Dancing Eggplant

8"x10"

Pretty little thing :) Every year I have this problem- I have no idea how to cook eggplants so I'll actually eat them, the texture has always thrown me off, but they're just so BEAUTIFUL I can't resist getting some and trying them every summer!

WIP

having fun :) Going back and forth between doing Day of the Dead makeup with this little girl again- it'd be awesome, but I don't want to detract from the amazing way the light is hitting her eyes....

Two Bones

5"x7"

Interesting shapes, don't you think? Duck, in case you're wondering.....
It's funny, I think skulls might be easier to paint than other bones, if only because of the instantly-identifiable factor. Like in a movie or tv show, what is the first bone uncovered, ALWAYS? Skull. Never anything ambiguous or small, no finger bones or little pointy toe bones that could be mistaken for weird pebbles, always a gaping, staring skull right there at the top of the heap..... what movie was that, Terminator, Terminator II, with the massive tank thingey rolling over human bones? Except it was nothing but skulls. Either the robots were taking the rest out for barbeque, or it was even more futuristic than it was pretending to be and the humans were nothing but heads in jars, a la Futurama.

Ok, clearly I'm losing my mind.

Off to bed now. More painting tomorrow.

Birdhouse Gourd

5"x7"
sold

Happy little gourd :)
After reading that many mosquito-eating birdies (something called a purple martin, for instance) like to nest in birdhouse gourds, Naomi and I decided to try to grow some on the fence out front this year to make into little houses for next year.... this is the first one we've picked, and I just think it is adorable!

Cherokee Purple II

5"x7"
sold

Just beautiful :) My garden is seriously overgrown, though, I was looking for ground cherries and somehow found myself staring at this thing! Strangely, I think my favorite part of it is the ghosting of Alizarin Crimson down at the bottom to form a soft reflection of the tomato itself....

Throwing Knife

And.... well, I guess we're back out of the flowers catagory. I've started playing around with knife throwing as, well I guess it'd be a hobby. Definitely a challenge, but I'm enjoying it! And the knives are adorable.

Gardenia on Grey

5"x7"
sold

Wow, is it September already? How did that happen?
Figured I'd do a pretty little flower today, just to contrast with the monster skull from yesterday :)
