"That Smile"

But I think I'll take a break from people for a bit, circle the wagons on that subject. how can something that I'm so familiar with drawing be so difficult to paint? Silly question, I know... but still. Sleepy tonight, and hoping for a beautiful day tomorrow.

Tuesday, April 29, 2008

Well, I'm really happy with one of the larger pieces I'm working on right now, and also really happy with some of the sketches I've got done for a comission that's coming up... so I'm forgiving myself for sucking on tonight's little painting. Maybe I'll do better tomorrow? Even though there's some parts on this one... I dunno, you ever have one of those where you feel like you're right on the edge of something, where you're learning and implementing things, they're just not coming together in a synthesized whole yet? Yep.

A little different

"Golden Girl"

Because people are really freakin tricky, and because even though I wanted to do my seashell again today I'm afraid I'll get tired of it, or something. So, trying people, just for a few days. I'm actually very proud of her hair, and her nose turned out pretty well too :)

Happy Monday, everyone. Just turned off the news- tornado damage is depressing- and I'm moving towards that whole shower-and-go-to-bed thing. Sweet dreams!

... and Sunday.

5"x7" acrylic on board
collection of Lois Sharpe

And perhaps the most beautiful thing I've ever painted. Almost enough so to make the last few days worth it. Maybe.

So, my excuses for not posting? Thursday I came home from work and had a long overdue total nervous breakdown- seriously, I was useless for the entire evening. Freaked poor Mark out horribly, but he was a supportive angel, as usual. Friday was almost as dreadful, but I got a righteous-anger energy-spurt that afternoon, followed by a last-minute-panic can't-freak-out-just-now thing due to having a show Saturday morning that I was woefully underprepared for.

So, up way too late Friday night, and up early Saturday morning, but the show went just fine (fun, met some cool people, we're planning on doing it again, yay!). Came home exhausted (show of hands, who isn't exhausted after a show? yeah, that's what I thought) and trooped straight out to freakin' BFE for a party/cookout/sleepover thing. My long suffering husband's social bug was appeased, and it was fun- but once more, no time for painting.

So we come home this morning, after pit stops at a truck stop for breakfast (yep), an auto parts joint for octane booster (husband was driving), and groceries (every Sunday morning), and I sat down for a while and didn't do anything- and then I moved over and sat down and painted for a while. And it felt wonderful, and I'm extremely proud of "yesterday's" orchids, and even more proud of this shell piece.... *happy sigh*

But now I've truly got to go to bed, because otherwise the whole Monday thing will be even worse than it would be anyways. Here's to a brand new week, everybody! May it go as well as it can!

Another one undone.

Hope this isn't the beginnning of an unfortunate trend- no, I'm sure it's not. Spent some time on this one, yes, but also spent a lot of the evening watching Pan's Labyrinth for the first time- really good movie. Fascinating, really. Back to normal tomorrow, promise :) Have a good night!

Back to my orchids.

Except that I didn't have the time to finish this one tonight- it got unexpectedly complicated. Still, I'm happy with it, considering the half-done thing, and I'm guessing I'll have it done for you tomoorow night. Something to look forward to, yes?

Just a doodle tonight, appreciating how the light comes through the delicate layers of the shell. And the fancy little highlights, and the bluish tones in the shadows...

And more of the same.

You have to love the unabashed sensuality of orchids- of all flowers, really, but it's the most pronounced in orchids, at least to me. There's something creamy and stark about this little piece, and yet I'm not sure how I feel about it.... perhaps it will be clearer tomorrow, and I'll know more thoroughly what I've learned. *smile* That's the best thing about these little dailies, isn't it? Learning, growing. Goodnight!

5"x7" acrylic on panel

Isn't this one just wonderful? Couldn't be happier with the colors, and everything seems laid out just right.... the flower centers were tricky, blast them, but they always are. Lovely. Got them today at Whole Foods, desperately needed some orchids and had just planned on some cut ones, but of course they were all out, so I got this little guy.

Cutest little potted plant ever- if she had cheeks, I would pinch them, but as things stand I've just been making little cooing noises at her all evening. *happy sigh*

A beginning.

What is it with me and Friday nights, lately? It's like by the end of the week I just can't function artistically or something. Oh, well, I'll be back tomorrow. This is one I started tonight, thinking about an elemental theme- do you see the clouds, in the lace? My current favorite part :)

Have a wonderful beginning-of-the-weekend!

A glass bowl, with three beautiful little limes in it. A simple enough task, and with so much possibility. This evening, at the end of a prodigiously long, awful and yet wonderful day, well, this is the best I can manage- the broad strokes, a bit of the way the glass shines blue where it's thick, the roundness of the limes and the sensual tracery of the shadows. I'm content- a glad that tomorrow is Friday. Looking forward to the weekend with me?

Having some fun.

"Peek a Boo"
8"x10" acrylic on canvas

Isn't glass distortion just the most fascinating thing you've ever encountered? It's been a horribly long day, and tomorrow promises to be even longer.... but take a deep breath with me. Ahhhh.... yes. Just like that. All better, huh?

"Garlic Cloves"
5"x5" acrylic and charcoal on panel

I'm putting process shots of this one up on Moment by Moment ( )- simply because I'm fascinated by the whole process thing, I guess, and because I'm tired of posting nothing but wip's over there. Sometimes it seems like I never finish anything, I swear.... but then I get in the right mood, and the right completions just seem to happen. Waiting, impatiently, for that mood to strike.

Anywho, this one.... saw some garlic cloves of Abbey Ryan's ( ), I never would have thought to try it otherwise- hers are amazing. I'm proud of some parts of mine, especially that middle clove, even though the shading on that front group isn't bad, if I do say so myself :) Happy trails to you all!

"Moonrise on the Ocean"
5"x7" acrylic on panel

Part imagination, part daydreaming my way through a National Geographic, I'm conent with this piece- and I wish that place existed, and that it was warm and peaceful and uninhabited, and that I was there on a nice, long vacation. Sounds like a marvelous idea, doesn't it? Peaceful dreams!

The air smells of summer.

5"x5" acrylic on panel

Bringing one of the shells back into rotation, and I'm so glad of it- so happy with this painting, so enthralled with the subject itself. There are so many wonderful things in this world to be grateful for.
Remind me of that when it's time to get up and head to work tomorrow morning, yes? Hope all of you had a perfectly beautiful weekend!

Saturday, April 12, 2008

Yep. Guess what I forgot to do last night?

But I am so in love with painting on panels instead of stretched canvas, that I'm not berating myself but so horribly for saving last night as a draft, and flaking out on that whole "posting" thing. Yeah.

But seriously, these panel thingies are awesome, the paint behaves so differently.... it's like it distributes more evenly, thinner..... provides more of an opportunity for translucent scrumbling, which can be so pretty. At any rate, very happy with this one, and if it wasn't so horribly late right now I'd go ahead and post it on eBay. As it stands, well, that can happen tomorrow. Sleep soundly!

Longest. Week. Ever.

But I must have relaxed at the end of it here, because I've finally managed something presentable, even if the subject is a pack of my husband's Marlboro Menthol Milds. Text is so tricky- do you make it legible? how much detail is necessary for a convincing effect? and even if you make the big text legible- some of it's just way too small, so that's always interesting....

Anyways. Pretty blues, nice shadows, and really looking forward to going art supply shopping tomorrow. Happy Friday, everyone!

Dixon again.

He turned out very well, and still not quite good enough. Looks like I caught him doing something he shouldn't be, doesn't it? He was just being lazy, crouched in a sunbeam, and I had startled him, sneaking up with the camera like that.

Love the blocky strokes of his fur, and that sense of a captured expression.... I'm so grateful that someone at some point decided to domesticate the first house cat. It was a stroke of genius, so far as I'm concerned.

Much better.

Bonding with my bouquet of sunflowers once again, this time with charcoal and acrylic paint mixed together for a wonderfully haunting look. Things are no less hectic, but I am content. Hope you're all having a wonderful week- and remember, Wednesday night means that it's more than half over!

Tuesday, April 8, 2008

Just doodling.

Fussing at myself, that my #100 daily is a dud.... I've been working way too much lately, it's killing some of these poor paintings. Well, I'll power through it, and once I'm caught up at the office I'll do a whole bunch of gorgeous liquor paintings, and it will be all better.

As for the little shoulder-devil telling me to quit doing this daily thing until I can get caught up- hush! I know me better than that, and I really want to keep on the right track here and not just randomly quit. Accountability through blogging, hm?

Hope you're all having a gorgeous night, and that you're only as busy as you want to be!

Monday, April 7, 2008

Layers and layers.

5"x7" acrylic on canvas

Lots of fun, this one. Layering different colors under the softest shades of grey, it all fades together. I love greys, they're so perfect and delicate. And I wonder what this one would have been like, if I'd put it over a dark red or a really intense blue instead of that bright gold. Always more ideas, huh?

Quiet Time

12"x12" mixed media on canvas

One I'm going to work on further, but also one that seems very peaceful to me, optimistic but at rest. Good for a Sunday night.

Saturday, April 5, 2008

An experiment.

Tinkering with the colors all funny, the way they shine through the dark glazing and the slight spatter effect I got. Not happy enough with it to sell, but really intrigued by the whole idea. Besides, I'm totally in love with the sunflowers I got from Whole Foods today, one of whom modeled for this painting :P So, what do you think?

"Morning Mist"

Just a study of a daydream- soft and foggy and bright all together. Hope you like it!

Thursday, April 3, 2008

As promised :)

5"x7" acrylic on canvas

That seal was just too much fun to do, and all of the distortion from the glass was crazy, but really interesting too. And of course there was a gin and tonic to go along with the painting.... inspiration, I suppose. It was good to come home this evening to work on this one, that's for sure. Happy almost-the-end-of-the-week, everybody!

From my sketchbook.

Not doing a daily painting tonight- taking pictures from my sketchbook, from some of the neighborhoods near here. Pleasent enough stuff, and a real nice break from those denim paintings lately :) Good practice, too, helps me to see things, and I always have been fond of architecture. Must explain why I majored in it....
Anyways, have a good night!

Denim no. 2

Another one I'm horribly unhappy with. Part of me wants to really go after this, part of me thinks this sort of subject might need more time from me than a daily painting gets.... and part of me wants to burn this pair of jeans. Any votes?
