Once upon a time I stood on a boardwalk and tried to peer through the glare of the sky reflected on the water, trying to figure out what was causing the waterlily pads to bob up and down so energetically. Eventually I was able to make out the little turtles feeding on the flower buds that were still under the water!

honestly, I've been terribly sad and uncertain lately. and then yesterday when I startled this beautiful luna moth from his hiding place and he was just so heartbreakingly fragile and helpless and glowing there in the leaf litter, no camouflage or protection at all and so perfect, obviously just out of the shelter of the cocoon....

I had to try and paint him as terribly fragile and helpless and glowing.

and even bigger than life, since part of that terrible vulnerability was the sheer size and brightness, this canvas is 12"x16" and the luna moth takes up pretty much the whole thing, just a fringe of leaves around it.
