Morning Light

A deer quietly gazing into the sunlight.... she was wonderfully unafraid, it's usually harder to catch one casually looking away from you!

Kookaburra

9"x12"

Sometimes it feels like I ought to do every painting twice- once to get everything realistic and "right" and the next time to add drama and play with the light and the brushstrokes.

Ocelot

9"x12"

Sometimes I need to repaint a painting and make it looser. And brighter.

Another birdie! They are put together in such an interesting way. And then those eyes are just the wildest thing, once they catch yours it is hard to look away.

Strange pretty fishie. It actually does have those three blueish scales!

Tentacles II

Having some more fun with these! They put the strangest lights on the octopus tanks in aquariums, though.

Tentacles

5"x7"

Trying to work out how tentacles work, visually. It's one of those things where we all have a symbol for it in our heads, I thought I knew, but the more I study on them the more I unlearn and learn.

Skull and Pillow

9"x12"

Ok, just for the record, painting shadows on a patterned surface is HARD. But that pillow is just irresistible

detail of an upcoming work....

Do you see how the little chickadee just saw its reflection in the unicorn horn?!? I am so proud of that omg. So this is a detail of a 20"x20" piece I just finished for the Strange Dream's Art Collective's Mystic Animals auction, it opens on February 15th. No daily painting happened today because I've got three bigger pieces with a deadline of like now so.... yeah, you know how it is. Do you recognize the chickadee from yesterday's daily though?

Tendrils

I suppose this was inevitable, with all my interest in painting magical underwater worlds! But my goodness what a challenge all those little tendrils are!

It's all about the light in the sky, and shining through that little bit at the top of the wave...

Mourning Dove

5"x7"

I fall in love with the most difficult-to-paint animals, I swear.... I've been crushing on our mourning doves for a long time now, just too intimidated by all those subtle color shifts to try!

Coalesce

Exploring the way light behaves underwater, and the way a transparent, constantly moving animal bends it!

Winter Kinglet

A portrait of an incredibly tiny, fearless, beautiful female ruby-crowned kinglet who has apparently decided to include my back porch in her overwintering territory.

My goodness, I'd forgotten how much I love doing a study based off a wonderful painting! I received a gorgeous book on Sorolla recently and just HAD to do some hands on learning.

Coming Together

the little creatures sweeping over the world.... I wanted to bring a little land creature in this time, show it's not just a drowned windowsill, but a fundamental change, like the animals are really existing according to new rules here.

From Mexico with Love

5"x7"
sold

I was working hard on commissions today, and rather at a loss as to what to paint for the blog.... when I noticed this just sitting off to my left, waiting patiently to be painted again. It's a tiny beautiful bowl from Mexico that I got at a wonderful local fair-trade place, the painting on the inside is lovely, and the way it's reflected through the marble caught my eye.

Rooster and Crescent Moon

16"x20"

This big magnificent critter has some serious presence, and it was so much fun working on him! The swirling grassy foreground is new for me too, and very gratifying.

Pretty much a color study, trying to create atmosphere and distance on such a tiny little canvas.... and then getting distracted by clouds, of course.
