And of course the object itself, this gorgeous old wrnech that is so sturdy and beautiful but had been used as a hammer enough that the metal is all battered and turned out at one end.... it's just fascinating :)

I got a couple of really amazing things from Broomfields Gallery up in West Jefferson last weekend- including this key and to totally awesome antique padlock that goes with it. I want to paint them together so bad, but I haven't got the absolute perfect composition set up yet.... This is lovely, though. I like how it's flying. And how awesome it would be for someone for Valentine's Day :)

You might remember a teabag I painted a while back, a little 4"x6" one with a similar muted grey bachground... I've just been thinking about it lately, and want to try another ones. I think the next one I do will have to be used and still soggy, with little puddles of tea, but right now I really like the soft colors and textures involved with the ones that haven't been used yet.

This is one of my little Nugget's favorite toys... she loves legos, but lately it is the lego animals that really fascinate her. This cat, and then the zoo set she got for the holidays- the elephant, giraffe, toger, polar bear... a bit of a random assortment, and very funny looking, but I love watching her play with them :)

This one I did wet-in-wet... something I never do. While I was painting that was driving me absolutely insane, but once it was done I really liked how it turned out, so I'm conflicted about painting like this more often. In part because there's no knowing how much of what I like is from painting wet in wet, and how much is from really focusing on making the cherry glow....
No, that's not true. I completely coated the canvas with black, and brought the cherry out of it. That's got to be why the edges came out so right, and perhaps why the light feels so strong- because with the highlighted side and the reflected light I was builing up toward the light the whole time, so it was really the focus of the whole process. Am I making any sense?

On Saturday I had to do a lot of driving, and since Naomi was staying with my Mama- like every Saturday, they love each other so much it's adorable- so I stopped a bunch of times and got lots of pictures of horses, and cows. And turkey vultures. Thankfully no one came out to run me off their property, wandering around with the cows and horses in my flip flops in December... it was fun :) Anyways, this is from one of those reference pictures!

If white orchids seem like an odd painting to post on thanksgiving... well, they are. But I do like orchids, and I don't think I've ever even painted a turkey before. And sometimes I get squeamish about celebrating the beginning of the invasion of this part of the world by colonists, far too many of whom were lust looking to rape and pillage and enslave.... oh, well. At the same time, having a holiday to focus on gratitude is a beautiful thing. So I've got some mixed feelings there, but that's just me- everything is a shade of grey, you know?

As you can imagine, this one just about drove me insane. Painting is the only way for me to really get to know something- I remember I was painting my cousin and while painting her ear suddenly realized that she has attached earlobes. I mean, I've known her for 14 years and I'm supposed to be fairly observant, but somehow I'd missed that.... actually painting something is a whole new way of looking. Like that, I mean, I know there was an amazing amount of intricacy in something like a grapevine, but until I actually painted a small part of one.... wow, you know?

I tried a different approach with this one than I have the last two times I've tried to paint a dandelion seed head thingy- this one is more about the particular- you know, like this exact one and not just the idea of a dandelion puff- and less about the overall impression, like I was trying to capture. I think I like this approach better :)

I like this system! You know me, I have to have multipls layers of paint on a piece before I feel good about it, but getting the idea one day and polishing it in the studio the next is a lot of fun. Don't worry, it's still just $20 like all my 'dailies' :)

plein air attempt

This is my first ever attempt at painting a landscape while sitting out in the landscape... lately I've started realizing that landscape are something I ought to learn to do. If nothing else it'll improve my eye for color! I snapped a photo too, though, and I expect I'll finish this little guy up tomorrow. It was the idea of those long shadows cast across the cut-down cornfield, kind of disappearing beside the soft curve of a, um, mini-hill....

Tomorrow I'll be driving out to Benjamin's Vinyard in Saxapahaw, NC to set up my paintings there as a solo show for all of November and December! I'm super excited about it- this is one of my brand-new paintings that will be included in that show. The opening is on Saturday from 2-5 if you're in the area- I'll be there with all my beautiful new paintings, and would love to meet you!

Allright, I believe the new blogger thing to be a vast improvement now that I've figured out a few things... still a lot to learn, though. Like where the button is that centers text.
But isn't this just the best little painting for the early winter we seem to be having? You just want to warm your hands holding them over the painting itself. Love it :)

Um. Trying the new blogger interface, mostly because it wouldn't let me post otherwise, and I'm not sure how I feel about it. Right now I can't figure out how to do the linking thing to my etsy shop, so that if you're interested in owning this painting you can just click on it and go straight there.... blarg. I'm sure it;s an improvement, but I do so hate change.
But the painting, on the other hand... do you see the moth on the box? and the way the feather is hovering in front of the whole thing instead of resting inside the composition? so much fun :)

You know, I've been trying and trying to do a teacup daily lately... and failing and failing. Which is not encouraging at all, and leads to more failing. So finally I just cropped the living daylights out of a possible composition, and it totally worked! I particularly love the steam. So now I have something to look forward to this winter- trying to get some reference shots of people breathing in the cold, that little plume of breath... though at the same time I hope it doesn't actually get that cold...

Once again I want to say I loooove living somewhere with a yard. And trees. Trees that I can steal leaves off of to paint. It's awesome. I do wish I'd had some masking tape somewhere in the house, though.... you know how other daily painters will hold a leaf or something up with masking tape to paint like this? Yeah, I love that. But the only tape in the house is duct tape and like 3 inch wide packing tape... so not the same look.
