Artist Appreciation Month and Brian Stroud

Once upon a time when I was a kidlet, someone gave me a Brian Stroud book. It totally blew my mind, and I found a few more when I became a bigger kidlet capable of tracking down my own books.

Because magical creatures and more magical creatures, ALWAYS. I'm thinking his amazing kelpie drawing, which was in that first book of his that I got, may have bubbled up and helped me with my water horses..... that, and reading Maggie Stiefvater's Scorpio Races.

And I might not have realized it but for Patience Brewster having her annual ornaments bonanza or whatever it is going on over there :)

Artist Appreciation Month and Degas

Soooooooooo.... apparently August is Artist Appreciation Month. So I'm going to squish a few relevant-to-that-idea posts in here at the very end of August :)

Degas is, of course, totally awesome. Ballerinas come to mind first....

..... and then stuff like this. Which is also awesome, his modeling always blows my mind.

And then I stumbled across this fellow and liked him very much, Yes, Dagas.... googleimages is not to be trusted, apparently it can't tell the difference between Degas, Renoir, and Toulouse-Lautrec, but this seems legit. And totally inspired (cue drum roll)....

A cat. Of course, a cat.

And then this weird self portrait, which I also thoroughly enjoyed.

The wonderful ladies over at Patience Brewster told me about the whole Artist Appreciation Month thing- and that is some magical stuff, especially the ornaments!

Close Up

5"x7"
sold

The first time I've tried to paint that cloudy next-to-the-yolk opaque thing that happens sometimes! I thought it was called the albumen, but google says that's just a term for the white in general, so I was at a loss for a title. Cool texture though.

Another egg! I really love the way the background is showing through here, it gives the painting so much depth and reminds you that it is a painting without taking anything away from the subject.

I got a request for eggplant paintings, and realized that I really miss them too! Such gorgeous, gorgeous vegetables. Or fruits. Or whatever they are. They're pretty, that's what I'm going with.

Dripping in the Dark Water

I am so in love with the skin pattern here! And the crazy colors. And the cluster of mussels caught in the horses mane. I think we might be on to something here.

Fisheater

Hm? Oh, nothing to see here. I'm just painting magical water horses. Perhaps slightly spooky magical water horses.

Gentleman Modigliadeer

I don't know how you all feel about Modigliani, but I've always been intrigued by his paintings..... doing little sketches based on them feels awesome. Especially when I've got so many nice long-necked critters around as inspiration.

Lemon Juice

Moving along beautifully on some bigger paintings.... still having a lovely time with the little dailies. Which is a good thing, otherwise you'd hardly ever hear from me!

Cloud Plume

Somewhere peaceful. The crazier things seem, the more I create quiet places in my paintings.

Flow

So very very blue. I don't know what came over my brushes with this one.... I think we were overwhelmed to have an egg from an easter egger chicken, instead of a brown egg!

This is an odd little experiment.... of course the origami crane is a familiar Thing, but the little cartoon clouds.... I'm trying to decide how I feel about them, but I'm thinking they're adorable.
